PISTOL YOUNGAssociation Director's Message

Well another season is well underway. I hope yours is going better than mine. As I write this I’m sitting in Illinois at the deer lease with the rain pouring down. It looks like I’ll be eating tag soup again with the second firearm season opening in the morning. I was out the gate quick with a few doe kills, but putting a tag on a buck has been impossible. All in all if the season ends today, my season would be a success. I was lucky enough to take a doe with my wife, Angie, sitting in a loc-on next to me. She was as excited as I was. I’m very lucky to have a wife that likes to share the same things that I do. I highly recommend you guys get your wives involved. The remainder of my deer season will be helping her to get a deer before season ends. Congratulations to BSBA member, Corey Bailey, on his fine Kansas buck.

I was fortunate enough this year to witness a very disturbing ordeal involving a bowhunter at a camp I attended. He arrived at camp with a bow that he had only shot a couple times over the last two years. He went out and missed a doe - at supposedly 53 yards. Come to find out his rangefinder was reading off 22 yards. When we checked his sights, he was shooting 4 inches high at 20 yards. He complained about his bow equipment constantly. He dropped his bow so I loaned him a quiver to use after his was broken. At the end of the week, he had missed a doe and buck, and harvested a doe. He had borrowed a quiver, a rangefinder, safety harness and purchased a new sight. He was unsatisfied with his hunt results for the week and acted very disgruntled. We, as bowhunters owe it to the sport, the game and the general public to know our equipment. Practice with your equipment; maintain your equipment before attempting to harvest game. It’s not the responsibility of your outfitter or other members in camp to get you ready to hunt.

Don’t forget about the BSBA raffle to be held at the 2010 Spring Fling. Lots of great prizes to be given away.

Thanks again for your support,
