Beep goes the tracking collar in the night. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and Louisiana State University (LSU) have joined up with Plum Creek and are continuing their white-tailed deer research in Louisiana with a new project in the piney woods of Union Parish. The research began in January 2009 with the capture of 35 animals, with all 27 adult animals receiving radio-tracking collars. Twenty two males and 13 females made up the initial captures with hopes of 20 or more animals being captured in Spring 2010.

All of the animals are tracked three to five times a week to determine home range sizes, core areas, and dispersal along with any other interesting movements. Already a 1.5 year old buck has moved over five miles from where he was initially captured, and a 3.5 year old buck was shot 2.5 miles away from his core area during the rut. Movements have also been documented in relation to the high water that has plagued the Ouachita River drainage system this year.

Tracking will continue through the spring of 2011. Hopes for the research include determining causes of mortality, survival rates, and movements based on seasons, age classes, and sex. LDWF hopes to be able to make better management and harvest recommendations across the pine dominated ecosystems from the data gathered during this study. All of this could not be done without the help and cooperation of Buffalo Hole and Ten Mile Creek Hunting Clubs, Plum Creek, Scott Durham and all LDWF employees who have put effort into the project and Dr. Michael Chamberlain of LSU.
